Madonoume Shuzo
Founded in 1688, Saga Prefecture’s oldest still-operating brewery is currently in its 13th generation of succession. Legend has it that in 1860, a plum tree branch made its way through one of the brewery’s windows and dropped a blossom into a tank of sake. The name Mado No Ume (Plum of the Window) was bestowed upon the sake after receiving much acclaim from the local samurai lord. Not yielding to brewing trends or production fads, Mado No Ume seeks to continue to brew the sake of tradition; the brewery slogan being: We will continue to bloom the flower of sake’s traditional culture.
